Job Description

Directs the maintenance of trees on public property, maintains city street tree inventory, and develops and coordinates Urban Forestry programs.  Serves as the community’s technical expert regarding urban forestry. Oversees the purchasing, planting, removal, and pruning of trees throughout the community. Inspects city street and park trees for hazardous defects, insects, and disease that could degrade tree health or cause a safety concern. Posts notice placards on trees identified for removal and coordinates the citizen appeal process with the Board of Park Commissioners, as required by City Ordinance. Maintains and expands tree inventory based on city annexations, as necessary. Supervises staff. Develops an on-going training program for appropriate Parks and Street Department employees. Develops and updates, as needed, a storm management plan related to City and park trees. Assists Public Works Department personnel in coordinating after-hours emergency response to severe weather incidents requiring removal of city street and park trees. Serves as the contract officer for outsourcing selected forestry and Arborist services, when necessary. Liaison to volunteer groups, individuals, businesses, and other organizations interested in tree planting projects on city property. Proactively investigates and responds to complaints. Presents to the Board of Public Works, Board of Park Commissioners, as needed. Promotes and administers the Memorial Tree Program, Tree City USA, Arbor Day, and other public information programs. Submits an annual report to maintain the Tree City USA designation. Researches and applies for external funding. Assists, as requested, in the design, procurement, and implementation of various city and park landscaping projects.Tracks budgetary expenses and creates contracts and purchase orders, as necessary. Submits annual budget request and annual report.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE - Minimum knowledge equivalent to a bachelor of science, and completion of the Indiana State Chemist Pesticide Training Program. Knowledge of current practices, programs, standards, equipment, and techniques in urban forestry. Knowledge and the ability to apply a broad range of arboriculture techniques. Working knowledge of budgeting principles and procedures. 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, superiors, members of city and community boards, and the general public. Ability to become a Certified Arborist within one year of beginning the position. Ability to legally drive a vehicle. 
EXPERIENCE - Minimum work experience equivalent to one year. 

Additional Information

Salary: $37,610 - $52,803

Schedule: 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday; other times, as necessary.
